Easy Mug Rug with Pockets Tutorial

The directions for this simple mug rug were created to bring the joy of sewing/quilting to those new to the craft and for a quick, easy project for those with more experience.  The finished mug rug  measures approximately 8 inches square and has 4 shallow "pockets" on the corners.

      You will need :
    • three 10" squares of material (or two 10" squares and four 5" squares) – one for the front , one for the backing and one for the corners
    • one 10" square of batting
    • thread – either to coordinate with the front or a contrasting color
    • sewing machine

Cut the 10" square for the corners into four 5" squares (unless you are using precut 5" squares)

Fold each 5" square corner to corner to form a triangle and iron

Line up triangle with corner of front 10" square, pin if desired, and baste down (making sure to baste less than 1/4" from edge so the stitching doesn’t show on the finished mug rug). Do this with all 4 triangles.

Lay batting on table and place front on top, right side up. Line up edges, pin if desired, and quilt as desired (a simple line of stitching from top to bottom and then side to side is sufficient – make as simple or elaborate as desired. Remember not to stitch over the corner triangles if you want to leave them for "pockets".)

Lay backing 10" square on the table with right side up and place quilted front square right side down (right sides should be together on the inside of the "sandwich"). Line up edges, pin if desired and sew together with a 1/4" seam around outside edges, leaving an opening of about 3" to turn. Use pins to mark opening if you need a reminder to not sew all the way around the outside.

Trim corners close to the seam and turn right side out, pushing out corners carefully.

Fold over material on both sides of the opening to the inside and pin together. Topstitch around entire outside edge including the turning opening.

      Enjoy your mug rug!
